Valve Pause System
Most all modern-era vehicles utilize some form of Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) strategy. The Valve Pause System (VPS) is part of Honda’s powertrain control system.
Prior to replacing any components the technician will verify the engine oil level is full and of good quality. This system uses oil pressure as high as 35 to 50 PSI to activate the Valve Pause System (VPS). If the oil level is low, the code will set.
The VPS system has three modes: 3-cyl, 4-cyl, and 6cyl operation. The system consists of three (3) oil control solenoids and two oil pressure switches. A repeated P3400 or P3497 may indicate a failed component in one of the two (2) VPS assemblies.
