The brake pad is an assembly of the friction material and is attached to a stamped steel backing plate. Some premium brake pad sets include a noise suppression tab to dampen vibrations and reduce noise.

Although not required by law, a growing number of manufacturers are fitting pad wear indicators to their brake systems. Mechanical wear indicators are small spring-steel tabs attached to the pad backing plate. When the friction material wears to a predetermined thickness, the tab contacts the rotor and makes squealing or chirp noise, when the brakes are not applied, that alerts the driver to the need for service.
