Fuel Trim and Engine Management Diagnosis
When un-burned fuel travels down the exhaust system and into the catalytic converter it can cause the converter to super-heat to temperatures far beyond its normal operating parameters. If there are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) present in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), such as P030x or P01xx for engine misfires or fuel and air metering/trim, these issues must be addressed to ensure the longevity and performance of the catalytic converter.
Because most fuel trim DTCs are not set until the total-trim number exceeds 15% on some applications, damaging conditions for the converter may be present without the check engine light reader being illuminated. Fuel-trim values can be examined by an experienced technician using professional-grade equipment.
